Sichuan Invests 3 Bln Yuan in Poverty Alleviation in 2003 (2004-03-12)

 



More than 3 billion yuan (361 million dollars) was injected in 2003 into poverty alleviation projects in Sichuan Province in southwest China, helping 310,000 needy people obtain food and clothing and 700,000 poor people live a better life, according to the aid-the-poor office of the provincial government.

In addition, enough water supply was secured for 770,000 people living in local rural areas.

Some 314 projects backed by technology were launched to help impoverished people make a good living, 5,860 kilometers of roads were paved in local rural areas, and 4,200 hectares of farmland were brought under irrigation.

More than 53,000 destitute people were also resettled.

In addition, 136 existing primary schools in rural areas were rebuilt and expanded with an investment of 100 million yuan (12 million dollars).
