Gov't Seeks Public Opinions for Practical Projects (2004-03-09)

 



The Sichuan Provincial Government began last Saturday soliciting suggestions and opinions from the public for ten projects it would do for the local residents. This is the first time for the Provincial Government to do such thing in the interest of the local people, said Li Hongren, Secretary General of the Government.

The ten projects:

1. To create 420,000 jobs, help 220,000 laid-off workers obtain reemployment, and to control the urban registered jobless rate below 5%;

2. To put the insurance system for the urban poor households under tight control;

3. To improve the basic education and compulsory education for the students in rural areas, and better the guidance and services for job-seeking university students;

4. To upgrade the public health care systems and facilities and complete the construction of 130 disease prevention and control centers across the province;

5. To make 600,000 accessible to clean water resources and enable 2,680-square kilometer land to escape from soil erosion;

6. To accelerate the construction of road systems in rural areas and finish the building of 9,200 square kilometers of roads to townships and villages;

7. To step up the comprehensive rehabilitation of the rivers including Minjiang, Tuojiang and Jialingjiang rivers and solve the pollution problem of 32 big industrial polluters;

8. To make vigorous efforts to build 5.5 million-square meter housing for the in-need urban dwellers;

9. To provide professional training course on agricultural production and technologies to 1,000,000 rural population; and

10. To enhance the preservation of farmlands and keep the total area of the farmlands up to 5.42 million hectare.
