Natural environment

·  Land Resources
　　The total land area of the city is 8,154 square meters, among which mountains and hills take up 3.000 square meters and plains amount for 5,000 square meters .The city has six varieties of soil, including umber, drab soil, moist soil, sandy loam, rice soil and dust soil. The city is rich in large quantities of quality clay soil, lime rock and dolomite as well, which have not been fully developed and utilized yet. Though "Jinan Qing" gabbro and "Liubu Red" granite are sold far away in more than 30 countries and regions of Europe, Asia and Africa, their productive scales need to be further expanded.

·  Mineral resources
Mineral resources of the city mainly include coal, rude oil, natural gas, iron and building materials, etc.
 

·  Water Resources
The local water resource amounts to 1.59 billion cubic meters, among which 1.47 cubic meters can be utilized.
 

·  Biological resources
The city has 149 families of flora, including 1175 varieties and mutations, and 211varieties of land terrestrial animals..

Environmental Protection

Environmental Protection is one of China's basic national policies and a great cause concerning with development of national economy and society plus happiness of the coming generations. Jinan's environmental Protection cause started in the 1970s. Through 20-odd years of collective efforts made by people from all works of life, great progress has been made in this field. 

At the beginning of 2000,Jinan City government vigorously carried out the "azure sky project" centering on making the environment green through planting grass and trees and improving the quality of mountains, water and air. In the foreseeable future, a new city of springs will emerge with azure sky and blue water.

Urban construction

By vigorously carrying forward the "three big projects", including the fundamental project which stresses on promoting the city's general service function, the image project which stresses on promoting the greening level to highlight Jinan's special characteristic on springs, and the convenience project which stresses on promoting people's living quality, Jinan's appearance has been greatly improved. One after another, Jinan has built a new railway station, constructed or expanded more than 50 roads, including the No2 round-city, Beiyuan and Shunhe viaduct roads. In addition, more than 160 skyscrapers, which show modern bearings, have been constructed in the city. The road transportation system of Jinan is being perfected. The flight area construction of Jinan Airport has been completed. Now the airport can bear the take-off and take-on of B747-400 passenger planes, which standards for its march toward a modern international-level airport. Three parts of the round-city expressway, including the eastern, western and northern sections, have been open to traffic. This symbolizes the fundamental formation of Jinan's big transportation frame. The convenience project has achieved prominent effects as well. The construction of the second phase of expansion project of Nanjiao Heat and Power Plant can increase the heat-supply ability of 1.5 million square meters. 300 buses have been purchased and 19 bus transportation routines have been expanded or optimized. The newly built 3.5 million square meters of residential buildings have increased the per capita residential area in the urban areas to 10 square meters. The green rate, greenbelt rate and per capita greenbelt of the city has amounted to 35.56%, 30.82% and 7.05 square meters respectively, so Jinan has been recommended by the Green Committee of Shandong Province as one of the ten best cities in terms of afforestation in China. The newly built Quancheng Square, which was constructed by means of bidding both at home and abroad, is a large-sized modern square incorporating the functions of cultural entertainment, lawn relaxation and shopping and covers an area of 16.67 ha. The design of the square stresses on the characteristics of the city of springs combining with the modern civilizations and exhibits Shandong's culture and powerful image in terms of its economic strength. In addition, the lightening decorations on some high buildings and along the sides of some important streets, such as the lightening groups over the Bayi Overpass, Silver Plaza and Huaiyin Square, have been completed, which make Jinan much brighter than before in nighttime.
