☆ Agriculture
Shanxi has rich resources of climate and land for agricultural development, and agriculture play an important part in the national economy of Shanxi.The cereal crops are consisted of wheat, corn, Chinese sorghum, millet, soybean and naked oats,and economic crops are mainly included of cotton, sunflower, beet and vegetables. About seventy kinds of domestic amimal are raised.In 1999,the added value of agriculture, forcast, animal husbandry and fishery was 15.995 million yuan RMB, which accounted for 9.8 per cent of the provincial GDP, and their radio of added value was 66.2:3.7:29.7:0.4.A group of bases for agricultural products with the cereals, domestic animals, fruits and vegetables as their emphases have been began to take shape in construction, and some local characteristics and scales have come into being, for example, the apple and asparagus in Yuncheng, jujube in Luliang and food grains other than wheat and rice in north west regions in Shanxi.
☆ Energy Industry
Energy industry is the largest pillar industry in Shanxi, whose yeild accounts for more than one-thirds of the general output in the province and whose profits and tax accounts for about 40 per cent.Since reform and openig up, great process has been made in energy industry to promote the province to become the important base for energy, heavy and chemical industries with the structural transformation of energy production from single coal structure to multi-structure including coal, electricity, coke and gas. In 1998,the output value of energy industry was consisted of 56.4% in coal, 18.6% in electricity and 24.9% in coke. So the energy industry has given an impetus to rapid development of relevant industries such as metallurgy, chemical and building materials industries in high energy-consumption.
☆ Coal Industry
Coal industry is on the important stategic status in the national economy. In 1999, the provincial output of raw coal and coke seperatley reached 248.94 million tons and 49.6 million tons,accounting for 25 per cent and 41 per cent of those in the whole country, which both ranked the first in China. Meanwhile, the quantity of coal tranported to other provinces and regions accounts for 80 per cent of that in the country. The washing ratio of raw coal is 25 per cent and the processing degree is 39 per cent. Dotong Mining Bureau is the largest base for good-qualily power coal production in China, YangQuan Mining Bureau is the largest base of anthracite production,Xishan Mining Bureau Gujiao Mining District is the largest base for coking-coal production,Pingshuo Coal Industrial Company is the largest modern opencut coal mine as well as Shanxi Coking Chemical Group Industrial Company,Taiyuan Coal Gasification Company and Antai Group Holding Company Ltd. are all the leading enterprises in the profession of coking chemical industry.
☆ Power Industry
At present the power industry has been developed in large units, large electric nets, high parameters, high-pressure trans mision and high-level automatoin and there are four electric plants with the installed capacity of more than one million Kw including Shentou No.1 Electric Plant, Shentou No.2 Electric Plant, Zhangze Electric Plant and Datong No.2 Electric Plant)in Shanxi which is the province hawing the most electric plants with the installed capacity of abeve one million KW and the overall installed capacity generated power reachs 10 million Kw.In 1998,the generated power reached 57 billion kwh,and the power transmitted outside was 11.09 billion kwh, so Shanxi is one of the provinces that transmitted more power to other regions.
☆ Metallurgy Industry
Metallurgy industry is the important pillar industry in Shanxi with the large scale and strong productive capability. Taiyuan Iron & Steel Group Company is the largest base for special steel production, Shanxi Aluminium is the largest base for aluminium oxide production, Zhongtiaoshan Nonferrous Metal Company is one of the largest copper mine,Changzhi Iron & Steel Group Company,Guanlu Group Holding Co. Ltd., Haixin Iron & Steel (Group) Co.Ltd.,Hejing Zhenxing Industrial Company are all the middle-sized enterprises with considerable scale.At present,the steel output in the province reaches 4 million tons,which ranks the ninth in China,and the ping iron output reaches 14.54 million tons,ranking the first in the country,as well as the aluminium output in 1997 was 113 thousand tons.

Shanxi is one of the important bases for chemical industry in China.The chemical industry in Shanxi majors in the coal with the productive capability of various raw materials for chemical industry,plastic products and chemical medicines.Shanxi Tianji Coal Chemical Group is the largest modern base for compound fetilizers production with coal as its raw material in Asia, and Yuncheng Salt Chemical Industry Co.is the largest base for inorganic salt production in China.Shanxi Sanwei Group Holding Co.,Shanxi Synthesis Rubber Co.,Shanxi Yabao Medical Industry Co.,Huabei Pharmaceutical Factory TaiYuan Co.,and Linfen Dye Factory are all the backbone enterprises in the profession.The products including chemical fetilizers,sulphuric acid,concentrated nitric acid,calcium carbide and Glauber salt all play important parts in China.

The productive sysem of building material industry is mainly consisted of cement,cement products,glass,glass fibre as well as building and sanitary ceramic industries.Shanxi Cement Plant,Datong YunGang Cement Group Co.,TaiYuan Shitou Cement Group Co.,Shanxi Guanghua Glass Co., and Shuowei Wall Material Co.,are all backbone enterprises.In 1997,the output of cement was 6.34 million tons,ranking the thirteenth in China,and output of the plate glass was 7.591 million boxes, ranking in seventeenth in the country.

Light industry,textile,medicine,tabacco and foodstuff and other industries of basic consumer goods are an important part of the provincial economy,and the industrial system with local characteristic has been begun to take shape.Washing machines,instruments for strength-building up,various metal products,plate making,lacquerwares are the main products of light industry,and Changzhi Aoruite Instruments for strength-building up Co.,Shanxi Haitang Electric Instruments Stock Co.,Yuncheng Plate Making Factory,PingYao Lacquerware Factory etc.are the superior enterprises in the profession.

☆ Communication and Transportation Industry
The communication and transportation industry have been developed rapidly and so far a complete communication network including railways,highways and airlines has been preliminaryly formed.
