☆ Mineral resource
Shanxi is one of the provinces with rich mineral resource in China. There are 105 kinds of minerals that have been discovered , of which 67 kinds have been utilized. Seven kinds of them including coal , bauxite , refractory clay , gallium mineral , alumina , zeolite and stone material for building all rank the first in China . And more than 34 kinds of mineral resources rank the top 10 in the country.
Shanxi is always named as the “Sea of coal” for its large reserve, broad distribution, complete variety and good quality. The area with coal is 62.8 thousand km2 , which accounts for 40 per cent of overall area of the province. The predicted reserve of coal is above 900 billion tons and the proven reserve is 260.8 billion which the accounts for one-third of that in China . The coking coal is the kind of coal that occupies a dominant position , which proven reserve accounts for 55.6 per cent of that in China.
The area of coal bed gas is 1,200 km2 with the predicted reserve of about 4 to 5 thousand billion m3 that accounts for one-seventh to one-fifth of the overall reserves in China. The proven reserve of it is more than 200 billion m3, and the annual output can reach 1,032 m3, which is one of the largest coal bed gas fields in the world.
The reserve of bauxite is 0.941 billion tons accounting for 41.63 per cent in China. The reserve of refractory clay is 0.594 billion tons accounting for 27.88 per cent in the country . The reserve of iron mineral is 3.442 billion tons accounting for 7.2 per cent in China, which ranks the forth in the country.
☆ Tourism Resource
There are abundant tourism resources with ancient and nowaday color in Shanxi. The heritages of Old Stone Age Culture, ancient buildings, color scultures, and mural paintings are distributed all over the province, whose amounts all rank the first in China. There are 35 thousand cultural relics that are unmovable , among which the wooden buildings made before Song Dynasty, Liao Dynasty and Jin Dynasty account for seventy per cent of those wooden buildings that currently exnisite, so Shanxi is hornored as the “Museum of Chinese Ancinent Art” and “Treasure house of Chinese Ancient Building Culture”. Shanxi has about 290 tourism spots including well-known human scenery such as Taiyuan Jin Temple, Yungang Grotto, Wutai Mountain of Buddhism Holy Land, Heng Mountain, Wooden Tower in Ying Country, Folk Residence in Jinzhong, Xuanzhong Temple in Jiaocheng, Guandi Temple in Haizhou, Pujiu Temple in Yongji, and Pingyao Ancient City listed in the Name Catalogue of World Heritage. The natural ,sights, such as the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall, Pangquan Gully , Luya Mountain, Gushe Mountain Nature Protection Region,etc, are all beautiful and pleasant places for vacation.
Shanxi is one of the birthplaces of Chinese nationality civilization with rich historic heritages. Yandi , one of the ancestors of Chinese nationality in the legend , formerly moved about in the region of Changzhi , Shanxi Province, and the three great people in prehistoric age, Yao , Shun and Yu all once established capitals within the province. Besides, Xia Dynasty, the first slave-system country in the Chinese history, was set up in the south Shanxi. Many famous figures emerged in various historic periods, such as the Jinwengong Chonger in Spring and Autumn Age, Wei Qing and Pei Xiu of Western Jin, WuZetian who was the only famous emperior in Three Countries Period, SiMaguang who was the author of “ZiZhi Tong Tian”,Luo Guanzhong who was the author of “Sanguoyanyi”, WangBo, WangZhihuan, Wang Wei and Bai Juyi, who were all the poets in Tang Dynasty, Liu Zongyuan, Yuan Haowen , Guan Hanqing, BuPo, Zheng Guanzu,and Fu Shan as well Yang Zexiu, Tan Sitong, Liu Guangdi. In a word, there are so many outstanding persons emerging from the land.
☆ Labour Resource
There are rich labour resource in Shanxi. Till the end of 1998, the general amount of labour resource was 2.0108 million, among which engage in agriculture, manufacture industry, whole-sale and retail as well as catering trade, digging industry, transportation and storage industry, post and telecommunication, building industry is 46.1 per cent, and 26.7 per cent in the second industry, as well as 27.2 per cent in the tertiary industry.
The cultural quality of the labours is higher than that of the average level of the whole country . Presently, there are 312 people with college degree, 1,042 people with senior high school degree, and 3,498 people with primary school degree per ten thousand people. The population with college degree and middle school degreee is always higher than that in other neibour provinces and that in the whole country. The proportion of illiterate is lower than that of the average level of the country, so the labour resources in high quality and low prices can be provided in Shanxi Province.
