NPFPC Department of International Cooperation Organized Inspection to Earthquake-stricken Areas in Longnan City, Gansu Province and Reached Consensus on Cooperation

From 27 to 31 July 2008, officials from Department of International Cooperation of National Population and Family Planning Commission of China (NPFPC), Population and Family Planning Committee of Gansu Province, and Oxfam Hong Kong conducted an inspection to the earthquake-stricken areas in Longnan City, Gansu Province, in order to provide the basis for making decisions in cooperation of post-disaster reconstruction and to finally reach a consensus on cooperation.

The inspection group went successively to Qiangjia Village of Fengxiang Township in Wudu District of Longnan City, and some villages in Wenxian County, including Lianfeng Village and Xiaojiagou Village in Zhongmiao Township, and Liujiagou Villgage in Liping Township. There, they inquired about conditions in the disaster areas, held discussions with the village/township cadres and the masses hard-hit by the earthquake, and learn about their needs in the post-disaster reconstruction.

At the forum chaired by Longnan government on 30 July 2008, all the relative parties discussed about the cooperation in post-disaster reconstruction in Longnan City. The cooperation would use for reference and extend the methods and experiences of social work and gender projects jointly implemented by NPFPC Department of International Cooperation and Oxfam Hong Kong in Jinta County and Su'nan County of Gansu Province. At the same time, the projects related to women's health, gender equality/care for girl children, technical training for farmer laborers/floating population, reconstruction of some village family planning clinics and Longnan Population and Family Planning Committee, and assistance to fixed villages would be implemented by population and family planning departments of Longnan City, with Gansu Population and Family Planning Committee and Longnan Government as executing agencies and NPFPC as the guidance agency. Issues about plans for concrete project activities and selection of project sites will be discussed at the meeting on 12 August 2008.
