Vice Minister Zhao Baige Met with Mr. Harry S. Jooseery, Executive Director, PPD

On 25 August 2008, Dr. Zhao Baige, Vice Minister of National Population and Family Planning Commission of China (NPFPC) met with Mr. Harry S. Jooseery, Executive Director, Partners in Population and Development (PPD) in Beijing. Mr. Harry S. Jooseery introduced the progress that PPD secretariat had made in its work and preparation for the 13th PPD Annual Meeting to be held in November 2008 in Kampala, capital of Uganda.

Dr. Zhao Baige highly appreciated the remarkable progress that PPD secretariat had made in raising money. She also introduced the preparation work for the 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health to be held in Beijing in 2009 and hoped that PPD could make use of this conference as a platform to exchange and discuss PPD's experience and strategy in the population field.

Mr. Harry S. Jooseery expressed his thanks to the Chinese government for its consistent support to Partners in Population and Development, and said that PPD would earnestly prepare for the 13th PPD Annual Meeting to be held in 2008, fully support the 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health to be held in Beijing in 2009. A special symposium on south-south cooperation was planned to be organized during the 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health, to mark the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The two parties also discussed other issues regarding the work of PPD secretariat.

Partners in Population and Development (PPD) is the only inter-governmental organization of developing countries in the world and holds a permanent observer seat in the United Nations General Assembly. The combined population of all PPD member countries constitutes more than 54% of the world population. Currently, China is the chair country of Partners in Population and Development.
